Facebook.com/surfacedesignwa Well I had a pleasant surprise today!  I received an email from a friend who happens to be the Washington state representative for the Surface Design Association (SDA) .  She asked me if I was interested in becoming the Facebook Manager for the Washington State SDA (the Facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/surfacedesignwa ).  And of course, I happily said yes!!  The SDA is a fabulous organization whose mission is "To promote awareness and appreciation of textile-inspired art and design through member-supported benefits including publications, exhibitions and conferences." And specifically, the Washington State chapter of the SDA says: Surface Design Association – Washington is a member run organization .  We are a collective of hobbyists, beginners, teachers, collectors and professional full-time artists, who are all enthusiasts about the rich and textured world of fiber art and surface design. Well I did it!  I finished my first scarf.  And silly me, I decided it HAD to be a hand-painted piece... which resulted in over 50 hours of work! I am SO glad to be done! whew!!!! I do love what I made... but I think I definitely prefer working on smaller pieces - items meant to be wall-art.  My official test-piece I started off doing a test piece - which I am not sure what to do with.  It's really not what I would have done for an art piece..although it's pretty.  The beginning This is me at the Fiber 19 spring retreat.  I've begun to work on the scarf.  The scarf, back in my studio This is the scarf after probably 30 hours of work.  Each flower takes about 2 hours to complete.  Yes, that's my studio.  And no, I do NOT have a table/workspace big enough for scarfs!  A close-up of some of the flowers This is a close-up of some of the flowers.  If you look...

The Beyond Blue Opening

Some of the fabulous Fiber 19 team I had SUCH a good time at the Beyond Blue opening at the Sidney Gallery & Museum in Port Orchard.  It was a lot of fun!!   Me explaining silk painting I demonstrated silk painting, plus there were demonstrations of encaustic work and hand-embroidery.  Lots of fabulous people came to look at the show and watch our demo's (and enjoy the munchies!).              Watching the encaustic process I'm just so impressed with the Sidney Gallery and their wonderful volunteers & staff.  I HIGHLY recommend them as a venue - plus they are wonderful to work with!  A different view  (I'm working on a camellia) A special thanks to Pam Heinrich, the Sidney Gallery's Art Director for selecting Fiber 19's Beyond Blue Show to exhibit for the month of April!!
